Job Description for Summer Internship
Internships are open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors who are pursuing degrees in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Construction Engineering Technology, and Occupational Health, Safety, & Environment. Barrier interns function in the roles of Field Engineers or Safety Engineers. In-the-field work includes, but is not limited to, daily take-offs, track quantities, day-to-day communication with inspectors and owners, oversee the project for the Project Manager. In-the-office work includes, but is not limited to, site visits, take-offs from plans, attending pre-bid meetings and bid openings.
The Internship program has five major objectives:
(1) To create a remarkable learning and professional experience for interns so that they will think enthusiastically about construction and what they have learned about the highway/heavy construction industry.
(2) To ensure that interns experience the benefits of working for a 21st century construction company.
(3) To provide interns with a practical, hands-on learning experience where they will be directly involved in the work.
(4) To create a pipeline for the best of the best employees to join Barriere upon graduation from college.
(5) To keep Barriere supervisors in touch with the new generation of workers and provide a superior group of candidates to preview.
Program Content: A bimonthly forum where interns can discuss their work and learning experiences with their peers. A summer split into two parts in which interns will work in two different areas. Typically, one part of the summer involves office-based work and the other part involves in-the-field work. Interns will give a group presentation to a cross-section of Barriere supervisors highlighting their experiences and providing feedback to further enhance the Barriere Internship program.
